Introduction

Why are you on LinkedIn? Do you understand how you can most effectively benefit from it?

While signing on and using LinkedIn may be straightforward, generating results from your usage of LinkedIn requires sophistication.

The following are the main ideas that you should be able to understand after reading each section.

We describe this “sophistication” in terms of a four-part methodology –

  1. Strategize
  2. Attract
  3. Engage
  4. Convert
Strategize

LinkedIn is a communication platform. As with any platform you use, we advocate you start by strategizing. You need to set your business goals and strategy. Simply being on LinkedIn – IS NOT a business strategy.

Don’t let this concept overwhelm you. It’s about having a focus and a purpose when you use LinkedIn that aligns with your business.

Think of it like this. If you want to travel from point A to point B, you can clearly define your route. Conversely, if you don’t know where you want to travel too, you are probably going to simply wander endlessly and not get anywhere. Which is unfortunately the fate of many millions of LinkedIn users.

Your Personal Profile

Your personal profile is like your personal billboard. You never know who is going to see it but for those who do read it, you want it to be as effective as possible. It speaks on your behalf 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Think of the Profile like you would a dinner table at big family gathering. When people show up, they expect the table to be filled with food and they expect to sit around it for hours talking. If there is no food, expectations haven’t been met , people will walk away. Don’t let this happen to your profile. It is critical to your success on Linkedin.

Attract

If your goal is to generate business and leads on LinkedIn, you need to think about growing your connections.

Start with the business basics – Ask yourself, who are you wanting to attract and what products or services do you offer that would be of interest to them?

Get people interested in you. Stay relevant and don’t become a spammer. Look for ways to make new connections while staying top of mind with your existing ones. Always focus on adding value. In this section, we are going to dig deeper into specific ways to help you generate positive awareness.

Engage

There are numerous ways to create engagement on LinkedIn by using your time efficiently. The goal is simple, add value and build relationships. Don’t contribute to the noise on social media – Focus on sharing insights and communicate directly with your audience in ways that add value to them

Convert

Perhaps Harvey MacKay said it best through the title of his classic book on networking, “Dig Your Well Before You are Thirsty.” Hopefully through the creation of your “roadmap for results,” you will be successfully digging the proverbial “well” for yourself and business.

As we’ve shared, “digging your well” starts with “Strategy” followed by “Awareness Generation” which requires “Engagement.” Successfully working these elements together puts you on the path to your desired “Conversion.” Interestingly, a conversion is a relative term. It doesn’t mean the same thing to each person.
